smART Magazine’s 11th issue shrunk down to explore the world of Tracy Ealdama, a Toronto artist known for her intricate miniatures that offer a nostalgic celebration of beloved and lost landmarks in Toronto. Ealdama's art captures the essence of long-ago storefronts, as well as iconic sets from film and television. She has a knack for bringing these locations to life in a way that asks you to tap into your vast imagination, and explore the feelings that live in your memories.
sM | You pay great attention to the rust, dust, and decay of the architecture and objects you reproduce. What inspires your selection of details to include and exclude on any given project?
TE ── I hope to mirror a glimpse of what is or what could be, so I'm very intentional in the selection of details in every piece. It's situational for each project. Art can resemble life - living, breathing moments, stories, memories, colourful characters - and it also can resemble hope. The hope is for humanity where, despite dilapidation and decay, even grass can grow out of concrete. When I see that, the resilience behind it resonates so much with me and is something I love to depict in miniatures. Despite the chaos and unrest in the world today, there is beauty, there is human connection, there is heart and soul, there are believers, and there is a lot of hope—because sometimes it's all we have.. ── CONTINUE READING IN ISSUE 11.
